living in the moment #29
at mum and dads house at the beach they have a wooden lighthouse on display on a side table. the boys always look at it and comment about what lighthouses are, why do we have them etc... after a trip to the park this morning to catch up with a girl friend and her boys i decided to go and visit a real lighthouse at Cape Schanck. the boys were fasinated and explored the grounds of the lighthouse, peered in the windows and looked out to sea. we sat on the grass enjoying the sunshine and the moment :: chatting about lighthouses, boats, the beach and what ever else entered our heads. we continued on to Flinders for a look and then back to Grandma and Popeyes.

taking the time to wander through one of our local orchards to buy apples. the boys were given there own slinky pommes which they loved as well as splashing through the puddles and exploring the old farm equipment and watching Bunny's hop across the path in front of the car.
when we got home our next door neighbours were having a tree cut down, so we stopped, sat down and watched with a picnic. no where to go, nothing to do except the moment we were in, it felt good.

taking the time to bake.
as i walked the aisles of the supermarket this morning, looking for snacks and food for morning tea, afternoon tea, play dates (aside from fruit) i decided to leave it all there, go home and bake.
i love baking and Hugo does and is normally at my side helping me measure ingredients and over the past couple of weeks has been helping me read the recipe. today with just Arch home, he was my little helper. he is starting to enjoy the process of cooking and wants to help, asking lots of questions as we go along.
i think this interest has deepened as i have been baking a couple of times a week recently.

walking home from school.
taking the time to slow down and walk home from school was a nice way to enjoy the spring weather.
we talked, stopped to look at bugs and flowers, waved at friends as they drove past in their cars and connected together as we walked home.

today Hugo went up a level in his reading at school.
it has taken a while for the reading to "click" for him but over the last few weeks he has "got it" and he has been going great guns. Today his teacher did running records with the class, and Hugo proudly after school ran to tell me that he has gone up a level. "i am now in green mum."
as a way of acknowledging this achievement and to show him that his efforts and hard work have been worth it i decided to celebrate this by baking him a cake.
he was excited and proud as we all sat around the dinner table having cake for dessert that was his special "reading cake"
well done Hugo you have tried so hard and that has paid off. you should be proud and i look forward to joining you on your reading journey.
i must appologise for the icing the cake was still warm when i iced it. i guess thats what happens when you have to bake, ice and decorate a cake all in the hour or so after school till dinner time...
